Rockwood Urban Heat Island Study

Gresham, OR

Increasing summer temperatures due to climate change are significantly impacting Gresham, Oregon’s Rockwood neighborhood. This diverse community, comprised of 47% minorities, 58% low income, and 12% linguistically isolated residents, has been disproportionately exposed to negative environmental factors like air pollution and rising summer temperatures.

In response, the City of Gresham and Multnomah County partnered with Juncus Studio to identify impactful interventions for the Rockwood Triangle. Through a detailed site inventory, Juncus Studio designed solutions to address urban heat island and improve overall livability. These evidence-based interventions include tree planting, structural soils, pavement removal, bioswales, and high-albedo (reflective) pavement surfaces.

Clear communication is a priority. Juncus Studio prepared informative infographics and large-scale renderings to ensure the community understands and participates in shaping the future of Rockwood Triangle. This project exemplifies Juncus Studio’s commitment to sustainable design and creating equitable access to green spaces. By working collaboratively, the goal is to transform Rockwood Triangle into a climate-resilient and thriving community.
